Menu Optimization Checklist

Optimize your digital menu for higher conversion and larger orders. Covers structure, naming, photos, pricing psychology, upsells, and common mistakes that kill AOV.

Use this checklist to turn your digital menu into a conversion machine. Every change here directly impacts your order rate and average ticket size.

Why this matters

Your digital menu is your #1 salesperson. Restaurants that optimize menu structure, naming, and photos see 15-30% higher conversion and 20%+ larger average orders. These are not design opinions - they are patterns from thousands of restaurant menus.

Rate your current menu

0/10

Menus with photos convert 2.5x better than text-only

Clear category structure (5-8 categories)

0/10

Too many categories overwhelm; too few make items hard to find

Names with 2-3 flavor/ingredient words sell 23% more

0/10

Strategic upsells add $2-4 per order on average

Dietary and allergen tags visible

0/10

Reduces abandoned carts from customers who cannot find info

Mobile load time under 2 seconds

0/10

53% of customers abandon menus that take over 3 seconds

Item names and descriptions

Use 3-5 word descriptive names: 'Crispy Buffalo Chicken Wrap' not 'Wrap #4'
Include 1-2 key ingredients or flavors: 'with roasted garlic aioli and pickled onions'
Keep descriptions to 1 line (15-20 words max) - not a paragraph
Mention cooking method when it adds appeal: grilled, wood-fired, slow-roasted
Add dietary icons/tags: GF, V, VG, Spicy - do not make customers guess
List allergens clearly - it reduces support calls and abandoned carts
Avoid jargon: 'house-made' beats 'artisanally crafted small-batch'

Photos and visual presentation

Add photos to at least your top 10-15 bestselling items
Use natural light near a window - avoid flash photography
Show the food on a clean plate with no background clutter
Maintain consistent style: same angle, similar lighting, matching backgrounds
Crop tight on the food - customers want to see the dish, not the table
Never use stock food photos - customers can tell and it kills trust
Add photos to combo deals and specials - they convert 2-3x better with visuals

Pricing and upsells

Use your real prices (not marketplace-inflated prices)
Set default modifiers to the most popular option (pre-selected defaults increase attachment 40%)
Add checkout upsells: suggest drinks, sides, or desserts before payment
Set free delivery threshold $5-8 above your current average order value
Create 2-3 combo deals that bundle a main + side + drink at slight discount
Price combo deals to be 10-15% less than items bought separately
Test removing $ signs from prices (some A/B tests show 8% higher conversion)
Example

Good vs bad menu item presentation

The same chicken sandwich, presented two different ways.

Bad: Chicken Sandwich - $12.99 (No photo, no description, no tags) Good: Crispy Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich - $12.99 Buttermilk-brined, hand-breaded, with creamy slaw and pickles on a brioche bun. Spicy. [Photo] [Spicy tag] [Best Seller badge] Default modifier: Regular spice (Mild / Regular / Extra Hot)

Result: The descriptive version with photo, tags, and default modifier sees 40-60% higher order rate and 25% more modifier attachments.
